UK BANS TPO IN GEL POLISH: What It Means For Your Gel Manicure & Why Your Tech Is Switching

BREAKING: The UK is phasing out TPO in gel polish — and your feed is freaking out. Let's talk facts, not fear.

What is TPO?

TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) is what makes gel harden under your UV/LED lamp. It's been in gels for years.

What’s happening?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the UK won't allow NEW gel products with TPO on the market. Salons have until Feb 14, 2027 to use up existing stock. The EU did the same in Sept 2025. Brands are already switching to TPO-free formulas.

Why?

TPO was classified as a reproductive toxicant based on high-dose animal studies. Regulators are taking a precautionary approach. Experts note nail exposure is significantly lower than levels in those studies.

Are gel manicures banned? NO.

Your gel manicure is NOT banned. This is an ingredient reformulation, just like when we went HEMA-free and 9-free.

What I’m doing at Nailz Hall of Fame HQ:

✅ Checking all my gel brands for TPO-free labels

✅ Retiring any TPO-containing stock by early 2027

✅ Keeping ventilation + proper cure times + no skin contact — always

What you can do as a client:

1. Don’t panic-scrape your gels off

2. Ask your tech: “Are your gels TPO-free?”

3. If you’re pregnant/trying, talk to your provider and your nail professional about options.
